# Rate limits

> Per-IP request limits and how to stay under them.

Limits apply per client IP. Going over returns HTTP 429 `RATE_LIMIT_EXCEEDED` in the standard error envelope.

| Scope | Limit |
| - | - |
| All endpoints | 10 per second, 3,000 per 15 minutes, 40,000 per 12 hours, 200,000 per 7 days |
| `search` | 3 per second, 600 per 15 minutes |
| `authenticate` | 10 per minute |

Production limits may be tuned for your account. The response to an exceeded limit is always 429.

Back off exponentially on 429, and cache search results for repeated identical queries.
